Destination Canalside, Buffalo, New York-image

If you're from Buffalo, then you are most likely familiar with the song, Low Bridge, official title, Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal.  And if that doesn't sound familiar perhaps the chorus will spark your memory: Low bridge, everybody down Low bridge cause we're coming to a town And you'll always know your neighbor And you'll always know your pal If you've ever navigated on the Erie Canal Back in the day, the Erie Canal's western terminus was the Erie Canal Harbor, originally built in 1825, which was known as America's "gateway to the west" one of the busiest ports in the country, teeming with canal and rail traffic traveling from the Atlantic seaboard across the Great Lakes. The infamous Canal Street with its bars and brothels, gave way and became Little Italy, and by the 1950s urban renewal had claimed the once busy port. In the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) was formed to reclaim the historic area (details about the reclamation/development plan can be found here ). One of the projects was the restoration of the Commercial Slip which was the original outlet of Little Buffalo Creek into the Buffalo River. With the restoration of the slip completed, the Erie Canal Harbor was reopened in 2008. Canalside was also a part of the revitalization, and today is a destination point for both tourists and residents of Buffalo. Canalside offers a variety of activities year round. During the winter months ice skating, ice bikes, and curling are available. Check out this calendar to get the scoop on winter events and activities taking place at Canalside. And within walking distance you will find the Naval & Military Park, Riverfest Park, the Erie Basin Marina, First Niagara Center, Harborcenter, and Coca-Cola Field. So bundle up and venture out from your apartment to see what's happening in this historic district, and of course, feel free to share a comment about your experience.

Curtain Up A Buffalo Area Tradition-image

The twin draw of music and theater have been a long-standing Buffalo area staple since the early days of the city. In fact, in the 1830s, the first theater built in Buffalo was commissioned by local thespians Dean and McKinney. An announcement at the time read: Dean and McKinney respectfully announce to the citizens of Buffalo that through the taste and enterprise of Mr. Albert Brisbane they are enabled to open a building which for permanence of materials, classic elegance of structure, and convenience of accommodation, will vie with any theatre in America. [1] And thus began Buffalo's long-standing tradition of professional and community theater. Today, it is still going strong, with a thriving theater district which presents a variety of theater, musicals, and concerts for the greater Buffalo area. In fact, the Theatre District's popular Curtain Up! celebration, marking the annual start of the professional theater season in Buffalo, has been held every year since 1981 and is the only event of its kind . . . anywhere! [2] What's Playing: Concerts, Musicals, Shows, Art Exhibits, and Other Entertainment Jan. 22nd Jerry Seinfeld 7:00 p.m. Shea's Performing Arts Center Acclaimed stand up comedian Jerry Seinfeld will be performing one show. Jan 28th The Band of the Royal Marines and the Pipes & Drums of the Scots Guards 7:30 p.m. Mainstage Theatre - Center for the Arts, University at Buffalo Featuring a musical celebration of the music of England, Scotland, and Wales, centuries of military tradition and pageantry takes the stage. Ongoing through March 20, 2016,  Monet and the Impressionist Revolution 1962 Building (check the website for admission information) The exhibit features the works of Monet, one of the founders of French Impressionism, and other impressionist painters. Painting in the open air, en plein air, Monet studied and refined his use of color to accentuate natural light, becoming a master of the technique. Albright-Knox Art Gallery is delighted to bring this collection gathered from six different American museums together in a wonderful exhibit. Jan. 15 - Feb. 7, 2016.  All My Sons by Arthur Miller The Irish Classical Theatre Company Billed as a powerful and gripping study of honesty and guilt and the corrupting power of greed. Set in post World War II America, it is the story of Joe Keller, a successful businessman and loving family man who during the war allowed his factory to ship faulty airplane cylinders to the US Armed Forces, causing the death of 21 American pilots. A tragedy of the common man in a searing moral crisis, told with electrifying intensity. Jan 27 - Feb 28th, Musical Fare Theatre - Ring of Fire (See website for dates and times.) Described by Richard Malby (co-author of the Broadway hit, Miss Saigon), Ring of Fire is about home and family and getting together and loving somebody and having a backyard and generations living together, it's about what holds you together in the face of a hard life, it's about the really basic family values." ( See more ) And back to Dean and McKinney, it was said of them that they were enterprising, industrious workers in their profession and as managers, and that the little provincial [up-stairs] theatre in Buffalo was a cradle and school . . . and graduates became leading actors and stars in the dramatic firmament, who there made their debut on a stage in Buffalo, New York. Did we miss any great shows? Let us know in the comments! [1] Home History: Recollections of Buffalo p. 370 [2] A History of Buffalos Theatre District

Entertaining in Your Apartment-image

First, decide that, yes, I can throw a party in my apartment. Surprisingly, that is a deterrent to many would be hosts. A party doesn't have to be a big blow out with dozens of guests. It can be a small intimate gathering of four or five people, an open house where a couple of dozen people show up at staggered times, or with some creativity, you may be surprised at just how many people you can accommodate in your apartment. Don't be afraid to rearrange the furniture, or remove it from your living space for the evening. Play around with what will give you the best flow for a group of people, and how many you can seat for a dinner party, or how many places people can sit for other types of party. Be creative with seating. A Pinterest search for creative or extra seating yielded hundreds of pins. If you have a patio or balcony, weather permitting, use it as a food station, perhaps a dessert bar could be set up there. (Or if the weather is bad, use it to store furniture for the evening, and throw a tarp over it.) Keep the menu simple. If you're doing a dinner, consider food that choices that can be prepared ahead of time as individual servings, or simply picked up from the deli on your way home. Food itself can be the theme of the party. For example, have a bread party, invite guests to bring a loaf of their favorite artisan bread, and you provide flavored butters, jams, jellies, artichoke/spinach dip, etc. to go with the breads, and ice cold milk of course; and you can provide a variety of sweet breads (which can be made ahead of time) for dessert. Have some activities in mind, but don't become militant about doing every single activity in a regimented timeframe. Stimulating conversation in and of itself is greatly rewarding for many people. And simply relaxing with friends and good food is a nice break from the everyday grind. If you do have activities, don't choose something that takes longer to explain than to do. (Although complicated games that everyone present already knows how to play could be fine.) If games are the focus of the evening, setting up a couple of different game tables with either the same or different games provides an opportunity for people to get to know one another, and generally cuts down on the time it takes to play a round or hand. So play Yahtzee at one table, Scrabble at another, and Clue at a third. Or make it a card game theme, and have several groups of people playing the same game. The Game of Mao is a crazy fun game to play at a party, but it's best if several members of the group have played before. And this link to the game has one of the better explanations of how to play. So pull together some friends, food, and have some fun! Please feel free to post a comment about how you entertain at your apartment.
